Abstract

Bauhinia malabarica Roxb.(Caesalpiniaceae) has been used in Thai traditional medicine for analgesic, antiinflammatory, antineoplastic, antidiabetic, antiulcers, antileprosy, antibronchitis, antiamoebic, antidysenteric, and hypocholesterolemic. Racemosal and demethylracemosal were isolated from the root of B. malabarica and were identified by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy. MTT assay showed that racemosal and demethylracemosal significantly exhibited cytotoxic activity against human colon cancer colo 205 cells exhibiting the IC50 values of 6.16 and 6.45 μM, respectively.
