PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF POLYVINYL ALCOHOL – GRAFT – LACTIC ACID HYDROGEL FILMS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Hydrogel films are thin polymer films which become extremely hydrated after absorbing water or biological fluid into their formation. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a water soluble synthetic polymer. It has many advantages such as good chemical stability, high hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, and low toxicity with controlled-release drug delivery systems. The aim of this work was to prepare PVA-graft-Lactic acid (PVA-g-LA) hydrogel films by the eco-friendly technique and then characterize by Attenuated total reflectance – Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). ATR-FTIR and XRD showed that the PVA-g-LA hydrogel films were a compatible film and a semi-crystalline phase. When they were immersed in distilled water, the PVA-g-LA hydrogel films had high swelling absorption, under SEM cross-section photography. In some cases, propranolol hydrochloride was mixed in selected hydrogel film formulation. The PVA-g-LA hydrogel films had good swelling properties. In conclusion, PVA-g-LA hydrogel films had been prepared by the eco-friendly technique possibly serves as a material for pharmaceutical applications.
