Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the phenolic, flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity in hexane, chloroform, dichloromethane, ethanol, methanol, water and hot water extracts of Clausena anisata. The average total phenolic content of water extracts was 1,834.66 ± 19.34 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) /100 g dry weight (DW), which was higher than the other solvents. And flavonoid content in hot water extract showed the highest flavonoid content, about 417.09 ± 12.21 mg catechin equivalent (CE) / 100g DW, was found in the hot water extract. Two methods of antioxidant activity examination were used: DPPH radical scavenging assay, and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Potential (FRAP) assay. According to our study, the outcomes of free radical scavenging properties were demonstrated in terms of GAE and cathechin equivent (CE) antioxidant, respectively. For DPPH assay, 20.89 ± 0.83 μg GAE/100g DW and FRAP assay values was 1,296.51 ± 2.23 μg GAE/100g DW in hot water. IC50 values (mg/ml) were 0.019, 0.046, 0.092, 0.13 and 0.279 for hot water, water, methanol, ethanol and gallic acid respectively. The gallic acid was taken as a positive test. The obtained results support the use of this plant in traditional medicine, and suggest more investigation is necessary.
