Abstract

Gamma irradiation is an effective process to reduce the presence of microorganisms and insects, however, it might affect the chemical components and may hence alter biological activities of irradiated medicinal herbs.  The objective of this research is to study the effect of gamma irradiation (10 and 25 kGy) on Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees.  Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used to study the induced free radicals and andrographolide content, respectively. Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were investigated by Folin-Ciocalteu method and 1,1- diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl radical (DPPH) scavenging assay, respectively.  Toxic effect was detected with Toxi-chromotest.  The results showed that irradiation at the doses of 10 and 25 kGy significantly (P < 0.05) induced free radicals in the irradiated A. paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees.  However, nonsignificant changes (P > 0.05) in andrographolide content, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity and toxicity were observed.
