Abstract

This research aimed to study the characteristics of silk fabric remnants from community handicraft production and to develop them into handbags for working women by applying the Patchwork Block Technique. It also sought to evaluate the design outcomes from prototype products. The sample group consisted of silk weaving experts, the head of the Th. Montho weaving group in Udon Thani Province, and 100 working women aged 20–45 years. Research instruments included expert interviews to obtain in-depth information on silk production context, fabric remnants, distinctive patterns, and community craft design concepts, as well as product design evaluation forms.

The findings revealed that: (1) Value addition to silk remnants was achieved by incorporating auspicious local patterns such as Kab, Luk Kaew, Khom Ha, Khom Jet, and Luang, with carefully selected soft color tones suitable for working women. This process involved fabric selection, harmonious pattern integration, and the use of quality materials, resulting in contemporary and practical handbags. (2) The Patchwork Block Technique enhanced the value of silk remnants by cutting geometric shapes and sewing them into auspicious local patterns, which were developed into four handbag prototypes: a backpack, a travel cosmetic bag, a bucket bag, and a wallet. (3) Overall satisfaction with the four prototypes was at the highest level (mean score 4.53). The travel cosmetic bag received the highest satisfaction, followed by the bucket bag, wallet, and backpack, respectively.
